Play, party, work

[ 队名:ONTO studio ] Kaja Nosal

Academy of Fine Arts in Katowice

Furniture set was inspired by Bauhaus – most influential art school in the history of european and world design. Everyday life in Bauhaus of the 1920’s was their main research and design topic.

The name of furniture system refers to the title of a lecture, given by Johannes Itten in 1919 – “Our play, our party, our work”.

Play becomes celebration; celebration becomes work; work becomes play.
Our play should become work; our work, a celebration; our celebration, play.
I regard this as the supreme excellence of the human task.

Looking back at the 1920’s, life in Bauhaus wasn’t focused only on work as one might think.
Masters and Students organised a variety of extraordinary events – they threw parties, wearing amazing costumes, designed for plays they staged. Also, the body awareness and vegetarianism were the big topics. Everyday life in Dessau was very vibrant and playful.

The “Party, play, work” furniture system is dedicated to the working space, but its use might be much broader. It contains abstract objects inspired by geometrical shapes of theatrical costumes designed by Bauhaus Master Oscar Schlemmer. Items have multiple functions and none of them is visible at the first sight. It allows the imagination to play the leading role.

It tells you to balance your work, it allows you to party, work and play at the same time.
All accessories are portable, which makes it possible to use them in a variety of configurations.

台灣科技大學, 台灣科技大學

Lu-Ji is a modern modular system which adapts Chinese classical furnishing style. The inspiration comes from the well-known Shong Dynasty modular furniture: Yan-Ji. Aluminum-extruted block units, along with other fittings can form tables, chairs, shelves, and many other variations.
Aluminum extrution, producing products featuring both light-weight and damage-resistance, plays an important role in comtemporary manufacturing. But rarly do we see them in our modern life.

Lu-Ji uses the directionality aluminum extrusion has to create jigsaw-puzzle-like connections. Moreover, Chinese classical furniture is translated in the pattern of the aluminum extrusion cross-section throughout the design process.

Speaking about forms and material, Lu-Ji's module main part is made by aluminum extrusion, which is light and durable. The fitting work with Lu-Ji comes in different materials, such as anodized aluminum tubes, pine sheets, marble boards and leathers. These different kinds of material combining with aluminum create a modern yet cozy and comfortable touch on the furniture.

Furthermore, Lu-Ji use it's special form, which caused by the aluminum extrusion manufacture process, as the slider to connect with other module parts. And allowing user to slide in and out for attach and detach. In addition to its slider, the user can also fasten the fittings by screw. When not using the sliders, It allows use to hang a hook or place something inside it. And it makes the space usage more flexible and friendly.

Boundaryless Ground

Taiho

The Royal College of Art

‘Boundaryless ground’ is a new modular furniture system that can be adapted to the radically changing norm of a workplace in modern lives. The change of the notion of 'work', from 'doing tasks' to 'creating ideas', has led to evolving the new form of workplaces. Nowadays, a workplace is being required to be open and flexible in order to cite creating ideas, which can be widely seen in many companies, not only in a start-up field such as tech companies in Silicon Valley. In the redefined work environment, sharing thoughts and encountering ideas between workers is a key to do the creative jobs. So this project questioned how the design of office furniture encourages workers to share their views without barriers.

The 'Boundaryless ground' furniture system aims to stimulate workers to communicate with each other more naturally and create ideas beyond boundaries. To do this, broadening the general notion of a 'table' is a key. By allowing the tables to be connected to each other in various ways, workers can share their thoughts and spread creative ideas on the 'Boundaryless gound'.

There are three boundaries that this project will go beyond. First of all, the 'Boundaryless' of an axis is aimed to expand the limit of ground so that the workers can draw ideas either horizontally or vertically. Secondly, the 'Boundaryless' of a writable surface will allow users to spread ideas everywhere. Lastly, the 'Boundaryless' between speakers and listeners is intended to change the way of presenting ideas, so that every worker will be a player independently on the 'Boundaryless ground'.

DESKK

Designskolen Kolding, Design School Kolding

The past decade of office furniture typology has seen a huge shift from cubicle farm to open and flexible working spaces. Over the past few years, office culture itself has shifted from a focus on traditional large corporate environments to small start-ups that have resulted in the rise of co-working office spaces. More recently, large corporations have transitioned themselves from the traditional workplace and are starting to integrate into co-working office spaces. Addressing the convergence of small start-up and large corporate office cultures, our office furniture design proposes a model that balances the needs of flexibility and stability, hominess and professionalism, privacy and openness.

Room dividers and large partitions exemplify the archetype of the cubicle farm office era. DESKK uses the partition specifically as a way to democratize the space, and considers how partitions help to define, separate, enclose, and group. Using four basic furniture units – the traditional desk, the high desk, the partition, and the lounger – a variety of compositions create modular programming spaces in the office landscape. All of the units use similar components in their construction; the partition is utilized in all of the units and is used as a corner brace/leg for the lounger and desks, and the form of the desk’s tabletop is mimicked in the seat of the lounger.

Work is sharing, creating relations and exchanging ideas/informations.
Thinking about the offices and work spaces in this vision is the starting point for creating well-being and increasing productivity. Therefore, creating flexible and versatile furniture becomes the methodology to pursue this goal. Applied to work environments, it is translated into the modular layout of the spaces that allows it to adapt flexibly to the work and organizational needs. Applied to furniture, it is translated into the modular combination of a few elements that allow recreating all the useful solutions inside the office.

The project therefore consists of primary elements, volumes and simple forms. Primary forms such as the cube, parallelepipeds and truncated cones, easily recognizable and calm. Soft and graduated colors.
These elements, combined in a first scale, create desks, bookcases, and all those useful furniture in an office. The combinations continue to create private offices, meeting rooms, brainstorming, etc.

The aim is to recreate a pure abstract neutral environment,
dematerialized and cleaned up by typical technical elements of the office. A space that knows how to transmit sensations of lightness and freedom, to avoid the built reality that offers few degrees of freedom of thought and action, and to free oneself from surroundings too much defined.

Starting from a basic compositional module the organizational models become more fluid and collaborative, the spaces heterogeneous, the colors and shapes characterized by the combination and therefore functionality of the furniture. The possibility of creating all the spaces inside the office with the same elements gives infinite possibilities for combinations and customizations, thus improving every aspect of every area and every activity.Another great advantage, besides defining all the types of space with few elements, is the possibility to re-define and recombine them according to the needs. Different spaces are needed in terms of size, furnishings and technology according to the different professional needs. Design environments with different settings depending on whether you work in groups or individually, and depending on the type of team work with these modules becomes much easier and more different. The choice of materials, dimensions and technique, is thought to give the possibility to act concretely, modify and build the environment, mold it and physically intervene, create, recreate, remodel the atmosphere, for a more fluid and flexible natural work.
The choice of materials and colors is dictated by the influence of these on the well-being of the people, on the company atmosphere and therefore on the results.
A rubbish soft touch painting is used to compact the shape and create a homogeneous volume. The natural wood for the joints.
The dimensions of the various modules are calibrated to combine in the different compositions. Some elements thanks to their size can be used in different situations and positions. Thus a bookshelf module can become a container leg for a desk, and a desk can become a divider or display panel.
The technique for combinations is interlocking. Remove the plugs from the modules that close the tracks and then insert the joint.
The combinations managed with this interlocking mode are many. From those standards to endless customization possibilities.
