Nowadays, people live in different circles. In circles we experience different worlds and we can grow up. Circles is the root of everything. The design divides the mountain into different circles and each circle is an independent world while they connect to each other to become a whole. People could find themselves in different circles.

”The cricket's chirp and the patter of rain come to me through the dark, like the rustle of dreams from my past youth.“ Tagore related his memory of childhood with sound. When lost ourselves in this busy modern world, we wish Dayang Mountain slow traffic system become the place to hear the sound of nature and celebrate the richness of cultural heritage in Suzhou.

Dayang Mountain locates in Suzhou city and next to one of the biggest lakes in China. The ecological diversity of the site is amazing, it is also known as the important stop for migratory birds. On the other hand, Suzhou is the city with the most cultural heritages in China.

Our landscapes are not only artistic beautiful, but also create an active experience with different approaches to hear the landscape. By using technology, we are able to record the sound, collecting data for research and share it with the world. It uses an interesting way to engage people in this walking experience.

We restore the ecosystem on site for animals but also creating stops like bird blind to provide wildlife listening experience. Space design like the underground tunnel and cliff walk allows people to be partly "blind" to have a better ability to listen to the world.

Suzhou is a unique city with a series of forest mountain parks situated within its regional planning. The brief calls forth an innovative solution to turn one of its mountain into a melting pot of slow-walking system; to resolve the topographic isolation amid the widespread surrounding area, establishing a new cultural image.

Our proposal depicts Dayang Mountain as an ancient painting, where the image composition is artfully ornamented with cloud element. A simple substance that drifts with air-like nature, effortlessly renders the mountain into a picturesque landscape; yet at the same time seeks to augment the existing quality into a new level of interconnected system – a 21st century mountain park.

The overall formation of the system is carefully shaped to reserve the mountain sacred atmosphere. Generous stretches outline the serene linear paths; inviting passerby for a contemplative stroll around the mountain base, as well as to ascend naturally towards the distant summit. An intimate experience with the environment of the mountain from new point of views.

The summit area is the milestone of the journey; a trail beacon that connects all the steps and paths ascending from the mountain base. New landscaping is layered upon the extensive zone of the existing road; setting the atmosphere of the prior constructed contour afresh. This summit park is cherished by the continuous walking system with phenomenal aspiration; winding around the series of summits, rhythmically floats on impulse evoking its air-like peculiarity.

The homogeneity of the system embodies a sense of connection throughout the vast landscape of the mountain. A simplicity engineered with long span adeptness and consistent finesse, where the concave and convex detailing is absent. This composite deck superstructure lightly floats with minimal supporting structure, dissolving into the scenery. As a result, disturbance on the mountain natural ecosystem is also reserved to minimum.

The design starts with a question, what the path should be in the nature environment? Thus, the concept of the whole project is: invisible path. It fully integrates into the existing nature condition and provide a wild experience for the visitors.
As a result, the path is an invisible creek, smoothly and naturally goes along the mountain
The path works as a various linkage to connect anchor points. In master plan, it creates 5 themes, to adapt with existing cultural and society condition: 1. Water park loop, 2. Cultural Loop, 3. Tea Field Loop, 4. Forest Loop, 5. Village Loop.
The same path has various performance to adapt to the themes as DNA element. It consists of different material, different branch system, different arrangement, and spread out into the big-scale urban content.
The special fence texture of the path make it softer at one side and harder at the other side, naturally divide the circulation between walking(soft surface) and running(hard surface).

In the overall planning, on the basis of respecting the original conditions of the base, the picking experience area, the cable car, the mine theme museum are placed in the foothill area, in order to presere and utilize the original resources ,and also enrich the diversity of leisure travel activities in the area. Let the Dayang Mountain area be feasible, and the history of the mines and villages around the base will not be erased.

In the construction of the walking system, the characteristics of Dayang Mountain are mainly reflected in the fact that it is the second highest mountain in Suzhou and can overlook Taihu Lake.

Combining the viewing angles of the medium-sized landscape in the landscape of Chinese painting, and trying to give the poetic landscape experience of Dayang Mountain. The paintings of the painters Guo Xi and Guo Si of the Song Dynasty "Lin Quan Gao Zhi" - "There are three mountains: from the bottom of the mountain to the top of the mountain, that is, the 'high far'; from the front of the mountain and after the peek, it is called 'deep'; The Wangyuan Mountain is called 'Pingyuan'. The three levels of viewing are created in the design of the trail.

Situated in the high-tech development zone between downtown Suzhou and Tai Lake Nature preservation area, Dayang Mountain is an overlap of the city and nature. However, the mountain today is an enclave of untouched nature, a topographic barrier, a pure traveling destination in a developing area. By introducing a slow traffic system, we stitch Dayang Mountain into the urban context as a “green core,” an urban park to improve the quality and attraction of the whole area. Rather than merely a natural sightseeing trail, what we proposed here is a circuits system as infrastructure and urban public space network to connect the mountain to its surrounding context, to unfold its unique history and culture, to support the emergence of future programs.
The program-based slow traffic system generates a spatial structure of the site. It is a network of a path spatial instinct path for walking, running and cycling. Based on the circuit framework, considering the surrounding urban programs and the natural and cultural resources within Dayang Mountain, several identical program areas, such as agritourism area, forest sports and adventure area, religious culture and art area and so on, are imagined to emerge. The cycling systems provide skeleton connections between program areas and the urban traffic system while a series of more detailed experience and more flexible connections are brought by the walking and running system. Spatial path prototypes are designed to correspond to various topographic and programmatic conditions.
At each joint of a cycling system and walking and running system, an artifact is placed[Lighthouse]. It is a 12-meter tall structure, serving as a beacon to guide the way, a rest stop to provide shelter and supplies and a milestone to give identity to the slow traffic system. The artifacts enhanced the visual connection of activities at different joints, generating a layer of the visual network. Physically, visually and programmatically, the slow traffic system manages to unify the Dayang Mountain into its urban context with its identity enhanced.

Suzhou is revered by peer cities for its splendid historic and cultural heritage, extraordinary growth, energy, and vibrancy. Dayang Mountain Forest Park is located east of Tai Lake and ten kilometers northwest of Downtown Suzhou. It is surrounded by multiple public projects, Suzhou Amusement Land Forest Water World and Forest World, Dayang Botanical Garden, and several hotels. The site also has a wide variety of natural and historic resources. Half of the site is forested and it has great potential to attract people with a well-designed, slow-traffic system. Sushan Village, in the north of Dayang Mountain Forest Park, has beautiful agricultural fields of pears, chestnuts and tea. Historical landmarks, such as caverns, Wenshu Temple, Banshan Pavilion and Fenghuang Temple, surround the site.

Despite the impressive landscape and tourist attractions, Dayang Mountain is not as competitive as other forest parks in Suzhou. The existing path and boardwalk is only located around Wenshu Temple. The primary nodes, such as Shushan village, temples, and surrounding attractions, are lacking in accessibility and connection. The fire lane cutting through the mountain disjoins the landscape and causes even more isolation. How can the nodes be activated and conjugated? How can circulation system strength and interact with the landscape? What will attract visitors and help guide them through the landscape?

Suzhou has a unique embroidery style called Su Embroidery, which is famous for its fine texture of threads, balanced composition, and variable stitch work. The landscape of Dayang Mountain acts as the fabric. The pathways and bike lanes are the split silk threads stitching through the terrain. The embroiderer crafts an artful array with a needle and different treads. We, as designers, connect the existing nodes by weaving through the trees, rocks, and fields, layering new programs for every user, and stitching the incongruities into a unified embroidery artwork.

Our design starts from the relationship among man-mountain-path to make the slow traffic system in the site from isolated to symbiotic.

Existing scenic spots stand at the foot of the mountain, or stand between the mountains. The original slow traffic system starts from the various scenic spots, extending vertically from the foot to the peak, along the ridge. Each occupies a corner of the mountain so that the entire area is divided into different small scenic spots, each isolated and single function. What kind of contact is reasonable and interesting? (reduce artificial invasion and connect effectively)

The natural relationship between mountains and clouds brings us an inspiration. The experience of traveling in the mountain can be like the way clouds circle around the mountain. We try to increase different paths parallel to contour lines in the mountain to strengthen the transverse contact of the mountain, to form the kind of wandering experience climing along the clouds at the foot of the moutain, chasing along the clouds in the middle of the mountain, and relaxing in the clouds on the top of the mountain. At the same time, the form of the slow traffic system strives to be lighter and blend with natural landscape.

(reduce artificial invasion and connect effectively) The natural relationship between mountains and clouds brings us an inspiration.
