The Headquarters N create terraces connect to west green area. The expanded terrace not only creates view and transparency between streets and landscape, while also forms accessible garden for work space. It sets a new standard for the contemporary workplace, where nature becomes an integrated part of the work environment while N features continuously adaptable to changing needs of North Design Union organizations. Inside, every terrace interacts with the atrium, offering a more informal setting for meeting, events and recreational activities. Spiral stairs in these spaces connect multiple levels in the building, encouraging physical activity and interaction amongst colleagues.

People live in different parts of the city, while assembly and cooperate in the same working space. In the future, posion will no longer be an element which limited work’s freedom. How office buildings are going to react? In the site of the Chentang district, we hope to create a future workplace that will be embeded in urban lifestyle. It can break the boundaries between city scale and building scale with unique shape. The street and plaza space permeate though the building. It was shaped and redefined as a inclusive and interconnected shared space. In this space, work could be a natural lifestyle. The boundaries between different teams are disappearing, the boundaries between work space and commercial space are disappearing, and office space has become part of urban space.

BETWEEN TIMES

Where today, we have laptops, tablets and mobiles that enable us to work effectively from anywhere with a WI-Fi connection, older workplaces were designed to facilitate rows of manual white collar workers and typists, packed in tightly in an effort to maximize efficiency. Office design has become a much more cultured process with an increasing focus on creating workplaces that center around the individual, and that promote not only productivity and efficiency but also creativity and well being. As the history of office design continues to unfold, today it has reached a point where the modern workplace takes inspiration from the home, through the use of warm colors, intimate lighting and soft seating. It also continues to focus on the comfort and well being of staff as companies have become aware that the office is an important tool that can be used to attract and retain the very best talent in a competitive marketplace. In this 21st Century, office space designs have evolved and have become one with daily human activities. People in this century believe that the culture of office have bridged the gap between the idea that work is fun, a place with a sense of community, that is provided with a recreational facilities and social spaces, office trends have been shifted and renamed as “campus”, symbolically and practically, to promote interaction and collaboration. This proposal aims as well as a physical work space, the “campus” is a symbolic, cultural and social place. The new “campus” is photogenic, promoting the corporation and its values in the media and to potential employees.

The Bridge
YBN-A-G95221

The future of the workplace is about ‘authenticity’. With augmented reality we have the potential for remote working and even professional home working. Technology generally is decentralising people. For many Starbucks is already the workplace of the future. Is this the death of the large scale office as we know it. The future of work will be shaped by the sharing economy, gig economy, open-source movement, and flexi-time working. We will witness an accelerated shift to a distributed model, with smaller, more specialised, virtual, on-demand entities thriving. Collaboration will be key, as will cultivating a network. One must be able to join immediate and flexible working structures. Skills will become obsolete faster than organisations can train them. We can expect longer working lives, and we will be mindful of health and wellbeing. So the workplace of the future is not about mechanised production or efficient working time - we have this with a wifi connection. Instead office design should become about what 'surrounds' the activity of work. For us this means a multi-stage life of continuous learning, networking, inspiration, and ad-hoc collaboration. There are problems with open-plan. There are problems with cellular space. Ideas of flexible and adaptable office space have been shown to fail in the past - it is human nature to be formed by our environment, rather than adapt to it. When employees are granted power to choose their working space, productivity can increase by 25%. This is the central principal of our 'Office' space design. We have deliberately not organised people, people will organise themselves. Instead we recognise a need for various spatial impressions - office space that is open plan and cellular, quiet and busy, smart and cluttered. Our 'Office' is unprogrammed but specific and varied. We disrupt open space with stair cores and slanted columns. Our project creates a central lake, and a series of bridges span this. We are inspired by the ambitious bridges of Tianjin. Our 'Bridges' begin with a large external ramp, inviting a journey up, through, and around the offices, with exhibition occurring along this route. The bridges connect a series of half levels that discreetly open up visual connection between office workers. Informal meetings, reading, exhibition, and conversation happen in-between, on the 'Bridges'. Our third type of space is the 'Basement'. A concrete space for a 'collective'. Something like a serviced office and a clubhouse, somewhere with the 'kit' needed by designers - open source labs with 3d printers, scanners, and workshops. Somewhere for the design community of Tianjin to access equipment (at cost), to attend events, to engage with office staff, and for new collaborations to form. 'Authentic work' is a research based idea that we should be ourselves at work. That instead of a uniformed persona we should be more deeply present. We have designed a building for this future. To do this we have extended a rural, forested, periphery site condition to subsume this corner plot. We reference Chinese traditional craft, timber structures, and principals and forms of Chinese ancient architecture. We seek imperfection, the humane, and the personal. In essence our design is about an acceptance of the need for a variety of office volume and type. We allow designers and small groups to form freely and interchangeably. We separate space in section using half levels. We distribute public event space and exhibition along a route of 'Bridges', connecting 'Offices' with informal meeting and breakout space. The 'Basement' brings a third group, and a further work environment. Not unlike a university building, the value is the campus as incubator. We do not pursue efficiency. Rather than eliminate the corridor, we reprogram it. We exhibit ongoing education, we expose different people and cultures. Our office is somewhere to develop a diverse network of peers, proactively engaging their feedback. This is collaborative, linked, open, ubiquitous, disruptive space. Office geography matters, but only in the sense of communication and cross fertilisation (not in the sense of hierarchy). In the end we create the design community of the future. Comprehensive Economic and Technical Index and Control Requirements: Site Area: 8118 msq Actual Land Area within boundary: 4911 msq Floor Area Ratio: 1.30 Building Coverage: 32% Height Limitation of the Building: 18.9 m Green Coverage: 35% Building area: 6396 msq

Vertical Village
YBN-A-G95316

This program hopes to create the public space in city, deconstruct and evolve the Prototype of VILLAGE in DOWNTOWN, form a high-density creation space. We will divide the future creative industry into the following types according to the office model and hardware dependence: 1. Small workshop type 2. Multimedia type 3. Social Media Types 4. Headquarters office What they have in common is that, they all need outdoor leisure space and public space. Within limited space, an effective way is to achieve constant switching of boundaries - indoors and outdoors, private and public. By interspersing public service spaces and outdoor leisure spaces between office spaces, it is possible to create a rustic, organic, rather than urban, rigid and monotonous environment for them.

Cloud Hill

The design site is located at the corner of the street. There are high-rise and multi-storey office buildings on the east and north sides, and small green spaces on the west side. Crossing the road, there is natural environment which connects the city park. One side is natural and the other is artificial. The two contrasting elements meet in the field, and the inspiration of “Cloud Hill” is coming out. “Hill” is the extension and enlargement of natural environment. The soft and undulating interface can provide openness and blur the boundaries between architecture and nature, creating a forest-like space that can accommodate small gatherings, temporary exhibitions, fitness recreation and other public events. People can go through the forest and enter the underground space through the sinking courtyard. There are exhibitions, promotions and other functions here. Light enters from the sky and is shaped like a mysterious and vivid cave. The upper volume is like a low "cloud" floating in the forest. Supported by the diagonal bracing and cylinder, it is huge, light and horizontal. The vertical courtyard placed in the ‘Cloud’ creates an interaction and dialogue with the ‘Hill’. The free and homogeneous space in the ‘Cloud’ abandons the pre-emptive space separation and barrier. It can, therefore, provide different choices and create a stage for designers to explore their own space.

Mixing Bowl
YB92911-S59524

Mixing Bowl is a space to contain numerous people, groups or events. It is connected with all the levels and spaces, and also continued to each levels’ terrace. Each terrace has its own size, shapes and characteristic. The terrace on 4th floor has biggest area which is surely enough to hold group talk between universities and enterprises, and presentation of products or researches. 2nd floor terrace is a threshold after passing turnstile and walking on the first stairs. Wide steps on the top level have proper atmosphere to hold talk or presentation from the research groups to the universities or enterprises. Also, people can enjoy the drones’ presentation taking advantages of the high space while sitting on the wide steps. Especially, Mixing Bowl is directly connected with semi public programs such as reading room, exhibition hall, open office or AV room. Thus, people can plan an event of exhibition beyond their territories being expanded to the mixing bowl. Likewise, Mixing Bowl is a space designed to facilitate the meeting and interaction among the groups and people in a building. Throughout these countless encounter and meeting, next creation is possible. Because of the shape of the Mixing Bowl, people on any location can enjoy the unblocked view to the space. They can see others interacting and encountering and feel the atmosphere of creation. On the roof level, Sky Garden is located and people can rest on there and do ordinary encounters.

Humanity Machine or Vice Versa
YB92911-S59108

With the AI (artificial intelligence) and the self- assembly machine on the horizon, it seems the creation becomes a common task that machine will be able to perfume will, then what’s the point to propose an office building for human creations? We believe the true creativity not just coming from the most update, but also can come from the long past where humanity in its most innocent form. We propose a building for people to travel back and forth to the very past and the very present, thus to help people to explore the unknown, the outcome of this will be the creativity responding to future.

RE-ENFILADE
YBN-A-G96245

The form of the building is both abstract and gestural. Focusing on a single, clear volume, developed around a central courtyard. Large urban openings connect this central void with the exterior surroundings, providing views over the city. In a spatial disposition, the object is located at the left end of the plot, in line with the surrounding buildings, thus preserving the established street front. The back of the plot, the right part, is intended for a green area, supposed to be a garden, a park that will integrate the whole environment. The main idea is to add a value to the block, a perceptible angle with strong spatial implication. Complementing the integrating concept, the public level in the building that is foreseen to be accessible for everyone, to be public and to present a passage as the main circular path in the environment. The initial generated volume stems from the basic settings of location urban conditions. By managing the urban tools, the percentage of construction and the coefficient of utilization, a volume is obtained, that is, an archetype of the inner courtyard. In many different cultures, the inner courtyard establishes the conjunction of common space and common life, a place where all spiritual exaltation are realized. The next step is to divide the already received block structure into separate four volumes. With their separation, common yard is centralized as a focal point and it’s accessible from all sides. This stage is main role for creating a new conceptual layer had a Chinese traditional house, Siheyuan. In that essence, the concept is about making separate objects, each of them having a different purpose, belonging to one family and one unifying owner of the whole composition of several objects. That concept of separate volumes from all four sides is repeated in the upper half but with the mirror positions of the volumes. The new structure of the whole volume is divided into two parts which define the cut portions on the facade that emphasize the monumentality of the concept and the object. Each of the grouped four volumes has separate communication cores that allow easy primary communication across all floors. The program division is such that it ensures full integration of all users of the space, the level of publicity to the privacy of the premises takes place on a vertical. On the basement level, public contents are provided in order to connect the object with the surroundings around it. It becomes accessible and transparent. In the first part of the building, the first two floors provide all additional facilities that would enrich the stay of employees and visitors, commercial, catering and sports. At the intersection of the two building parts, two floors provide for all open programs in which the comfort of the employees will be satisfied. In that part there are all needs for rest, recreation, open amphitheaters, open lecture rooms and conference rooms. Hypothetically, it is an open square where various manifestations are derived in different parts of that level. In the upper parts, the last 3 levels are provided for office needs and research activities. The possibility of separating the offices is large and unlimited. Our proposal is a blend between the open and independent type of offices, supplementing the needs for carrying out research activities. The design elaborates the social, cultural and professional ambitions of the company by combining the workplace with other communal activities. Our new building echoes the aspirations of a modern organization, mediating between local and global, private and public, collective and individual, formal and informal, and in doing so establishing its dynamic identity.

Urban Technological Park
YB92911-S59679

By definition, an innovation space is a place where new ideas, new applications and new products emerge. Moreover, it’s a place where new experiments take shape. As for Hexi district, which shifted from an old industrial zone to developed industries, such an industrial area requires a new innovation space where different activities and concepts see light. Hence, this technological park is designed. As the technologist Kevin Belly believes, technology is a “Force of Nature” evolving along the same principles as any living species. Thusly, we must stop seeing tech and nature as sparring partners and start concentrating on helping them to dance. By focusing on that theory, Technology, Nature and Humans must interact as a productive organism. From that perspective, a new project emerges for blending these important parameters. This project is composed of different components: the Park, The Voids and the Technological space. By detaching the innovative and technological space from the ground, an urban industrial park is conceived. The industrial platform created by the fact of detachment will introduce a much needed urban interaction. It becomes a public platform where different events and activities take place; Also, it can be an area for experimenting any technological idea or innovative concept. This horizontal park is developed while considering vertical connection and circulation to get to the new innovative space blended with green spaces and human communication. It extends into a vertical promenade, thus the whole project turns into a park uniting Nature, Technology and Humans. This verticality is concretized by applying an oblique circulation and floating gardens approaches. These architectonic pieces increase the human experience towards this innovative space. Moreover, by adopting this approach the gap between human, nature and technology decreases. By taking the pedestrian ramps, visitors can tour to get to some new upper green platforms where different technological activities can take place such as pause-café or an exhibition. Floating slabs are pierced by some greenery. In their turn, greenery is developed as an object that transforms that park to a technological breathing zone. The technological space is lifted up to look like a digital cloud always floating. That floating space is imagined over the ground, creating a new vertical dialogue between these two fragments without creating any horizontal architectural scars or wounds. This concept introduces an urban, cultural and technological void, that is inhabited by communication and interaction. Moreover, the digital cloud is designed as fragments between functions and green voids, which enhance the sustainability of the space as a surface for communication and innovation. In their turn, these green voids are conceived to look like floating spaces too which allows the air and the sunlight to freely circulate in the space. All of these natural parameters increase the technological productivity. Furthermore, this approach of voids minimizes the distance between human and technology. Many functions are housed in the interior such as open and private offices, laboratories, libraries and exhibition open space... The core of the project is designed as an open space while taking into consideration flexibility as a key word for the office of the future. An office is no longer just a place to work, it can morph into various setups like a space to meet, think, play, exhibit and celebrate. The flexibility enhances the sustainability of the space and introduces our world office to a new logic of efficiency. In another hand, vertical connection continues also to the roof. It’s considered like a fifth façade that reflects the inner core and at the same time it’s where different activities like a gym and a bar take place. Finally, that verticality continues to the future, to the unknown of any technology invention where Nature, Human and technology become one single element.

The Model for Future Design Headquarters – WAVE
YB92911-S530

Situated at the center of Chentang Science & Technology Business District, North Design Union (NDU) Headquarters has responsibility to be the prototype of a new fusion among all industries. While neither innovation nor pratice, the NDU headquarts contains strong DNA of each. This landmark destination is sculpted to a place of forward-thinking innovation. The NDU truly becomes the heart of Chentang district with its integrated roof and energetic internal diverse programs. Our proposal aspires to a next-generational working model in which designers are creating in an increasingly cross-disciplinary format with curated inspiration experiences targeting specific designing outcomes. An open 5 levels height super-atrium engages all the users and experiences into one active promoting environment, becomes the soul of NDU headquarters.

The new headquarter is inspired by traditional Chinese wooden box which shift-opened in sections to create 4 different boxes of differentiated porosity, height and layout that address the highly customised yet diverse inner structures of contemporary modes of working. After decades of search for the ideal layout for working space from repetitive cubicles to open plan for ultimate flexibility (especially in creative industries emerged since the 21st century alongside with the Internet), neither the hipster open-office and hot-desk, nor the old school independent work console alone is proved to be a success for all. The type of work, operation, mood, personality as well as human dynamics determine the optimal setting for work e.g. millennials like to switch working environment quite often from office to home, libraries to cafe, indoor to outdoor. Flexibility is not the ultimate aim, whose benefit is exaggerated and found to render giant under-utilised empty spaces, but the choice and diversity of settings based on shifting preferences. Creative work covers an exceptionally wide range of differentiated tasks on a daily basis, e.g. conceptual design, client meetings, translation from ideas to execution, production coordination etc. Across the spectrum, from folly-like pavilions, reconfigurable rooms, semi-open offices to glazed independent rooms, each contribute differently to a certain type of work culture and process, as well as mood and dynamics, which often swings along the roller-coaster process of creation. Hence, we propose the new headquarter as a full spectrum of working spaces. 4 different modes of layout in terms of usage, atmosphere, privacy, acoustic quality and light intensity are stacked and shifted on top of each other. Users can now select their optimal settings for work. Composed out of a uniform 3x3m orthogonal grid, the plans of the 4 levels present themselves as totally different identities. Storey-height of each level also changes according to the type of layout and programme. Users are entitled to pick their optimal work setting according to their mode of works and moods. Instead of being empty to be flexible, new workspaces should be well-equipped to be diverse and thus possible to merge with different programs. Greenery is maximised by locating the parking on basement, allowing patches of different textures, e.g. water pond, lawn, tree dune, hard paving, to be distributed on the ground to create communal spaces of different characters and scales. With cores and services on either side, structurally supported by slender steel columns in 6x6m grid vertically and 1mD ceiling-floor truss horizontally, the structural framework can work with different configurations. Each floor is protected by a buffering zone of either open or covered balcony space, creating an interstitial layer of work/circulation space sandwiched in the middle and filtrating sunlight into the interior. The alternating continuous terraces are also serving as an in-between space for social exchange and interaction which are well encouraged in creative context, like a peristyle in traditional Chinese or classical Western university architecture for discussions among scholars. Beside workspace, ancillary functions, like exhibition area, dining hall, lecture rooms, gym room etc., are indispensable for contemporary work-life balance environment. Instead of separating ‘work’ and ‘life’ as in the old days, the new headquarter absorbs these functions and inserting them seamlessly into the workspace according to their suitable settings. Cladded with thin aluminium panels, the porosity alters with the different levels in response to the types of working environment, e.g. highest porosity on ground, least on the top floor, fitting the natural light illumination and privacy level at their optimal intensity. The light material palette not only lighten up the interior, but also presents the extreme neutrality for users’ individual customisation to happen.

GREEN RE-UNION/
YBN-A-G99163

Green Re-Union aims at exploring a spatial pattern for generic office architecture, which has a legible and flexible internal structure. This spatial experiment allows all the users, including designers and architects of North Design Union, related engineer teams, current or potential clients and even the general public who have interests in design and architecture, to enjoy a cozy but exciting environment together under one roof. The goal of Green Re-Union is not only promoting the efficiency of design sharing, the cooperation between design enterprises and academic institutions, but also enhancing the impact of Hexi District as an icon of national design industry’s basecamp, by bringing design minds into city life and social connections. - A Revival of the timeless workplace “Architecture should improve the lives of people who use it.” —— Herman Hertzberg In the end of 1960s, Dutch Structuralism architect Herman Hertzberg designed Centraal Beheer Apeldoorn with an exemplary spatial framework for office spaces, which has inspired the following architect for decades. Living in the 21st century, we are getting used to all kinds of myth for a modern environment in the future. The time is changing, but our deeper human needs of dwelling and social activities remain the same. The desire of getting close to nature, watching activities of other people, defining oneself in a social network, is essential human nature. Green Re-Union shows the ambition of bringing a timeless framework from half a century ago into modern city life in North China. It is seeking for the future in the past. - Eight Working Clusters + Three Atriums + A Roof Terrace Green Re-Union offers eight clusters of functional spaces, every four of which surround an atrium, with an internal street going through. This spatial framework enables every single spot inside eight clusters have the natural light, either from outside or inside; guaranties an efficient and flexible circulation system; encourages social interaction by connecting public and semi-public spaces together. Two different kinds of functional spaces are created: one is more regular and official, suitable for individual design enterprises; the other is more relaxing and flexible, used as the communicating spaces between individual firms and also between enterprises and visitors. A cover with vertical green protects the micro environment inside from the traffic noise outside, but lets the natural wind in. Between the green roof and atrium roof is a public outside terrace, providing the designers and also citizens with urban farming, gym, swimming pool, restaurant, bookstore, and the most important, the chance to bring DESIGN to the city, to the public. This roof will be used as an active platform for launching new design ideas, encouraging public engagement and educating the next generation.

Interactive Void

The design for the new general headquarters aspires to create a building that is adaptable, interactive, and accessible for everybody. The principal act is to elevate a substantial part of the program while lower the other part. By doing so a public void is created within and underneath the structure. As such the void fundamentally becomes part of the building, creating an informal cultural plaza within the formal boundary of the building which provides a new sense of dynamic interaction between the city and the young workforce within the design community. Chentang Business District will be surrounded by two substantial natural forces Tianjin green urban park from the north and the planned urban landscape belt from the west which creates an enormous pedestrian destination and connection through the district, and our project site is in the crossroad between these two belts, as such the proposal is aiming to emphasize these forces by making the park pathways gradually lead to the entry ramp that connects our project parts together, as such making the designed void of interaction a part of the green nature allowing more human flow inside the cultural plaza which could generate more interaction and information exchange between the different communities inside. The project program is divided into four main floors each contains different function. The floating floor above the ground level is the only volume visible through the city which creates a cultural landmark in the area and it function as an exhibitional and educational floor. While the lower volume contains three levels the first one is for research, the second contains working spaces, and the lowest is an open floor connected directly with the culture plaza and this one is a free level of interaction, relaxing, and exercising, which could be accessible by the public. In the same time all the interior spaces inside the different levels are flexible and interconnected through a simple open plan that is human-oriented which could create open and freedom modern environment that is capable of coping with the union future evolution of instant information spread, strong interaction, and enhancing innovation among the young talents. A dynamic ramp connects the interior spaces in different levels with each other as it provides a direct connection with the cultural plaza creating a special interactive experience between people working inside and the outer community through a transparent glass facade.

Cloud Commune

The building is divided into two parts. One is on the north side and the other is the south side. The south volume is the Cloud Space, which is the information collection platform. The functions on the south side include the lecture hall, BIM center and information gathering center, which also have leisure, fitness and entertainment functions. On the one hand, with the continuous entrance of small enterprises in the north, their information is summarized into the Cloud Space in the south. On the other hand, the entrance hall at the bottom introduces the migrant population. Therefore, the Cloud Space has become a place to negotiate projects on a daily basis. In the future, the concept of "Cloud" should be reflected in a more comprehensive way, not only in the actual architectural form, but also in the virtual data processing. Cloud space, southward information processing center, will interact with the outside world through APP in the future, and observe the status, size and free time of the team inside through mobile phone in real time, forming an online communication platform. “Commune” is the abbreviation of a high-quality and efficient operation group completed under the guidance of public ownership. As the operation cooperation under the group system, this mode focuses on the embodiment of efficiency. The space on the north side is variable. The uniform exposed concrete partition wall is used as the material to superimpose a 45-degree torsion axis net on the basis of the orthogonal axis net. Therefore, a lot of variable space and various spatial combinations are formed in the interior to adapt to the entrance of enterprises of different sizes. The “Cloud” on the south side and the “Commune” on the north side combine to form a “Commune Cloud”, which will spread a lot of information to the outside world and become a space for information processing and business talks.

THE LINE
YBN-A-G100364

Line, in an abstract sense, is an invisible threshold that is simultaneously thin and thick. Line sets up boundary, it also could be the opportunity for crossing. The project intends to investigate the meaning of line and widen the threshold across multi-disciplinary fields through architectural instrument, inventing an incubator of innovation and collaboration for North Design Union. The most prominent architectural move- a diagonally cut through the building, where each floor is divided by this conceptual “WALL” into two compartments-open office space and interactive urban public space, purposefully misaligned between typical office level and public space level, which suggests dynamic visual dialogue between each two levels of activities and offers the heterogeneous spatial character of always seeing and being seen. This new typological intervention creates reciprocity between concentration and interaction as responding to the present homogeneous working environment as general. As digital tools are heavily relied in the present working environment of design field, we believe design creativity is more a process of interactive communication and mutual inspiration. Flexibility is largely encouraged by introducing uninterrupted open floors as for accommodating changing numbers of groups. On a more intimate scale, mutually permeated spaces between the lines on all floors allows for meeting/discussion/multi-media exhibition/workshops inhabiting smaller groups that generates constant interaction between formal and informal. Through its minimum footprint occupancy on ground and maximized 30m height on elevation, the exterior of the building assembles massive screen exhibiting the creative process of design from NDU, engages the city with an open plaza that emerged with ground floor lobby entry, auditorium and cafeteria. The concept is further articulated by challenging the traditional centralized office core layout and proposing an inside-out expressed core that grows from the central diagonal LINE- two pairs of scenic lifts are allocated in two atriums that one dedicated to office and the other serves for public space floors, while the egress stairs and service zone are exposed at the two ends, defining a vigorous urban interface. The coexistence of the two seemingly contradicted spatial conditions - partition and openness, is common goal but more of a cliché in Le Corbusier’s Domino system in majority of office/institutional types of architecture. In this project, we aim to establish a new pedagogical model that embraces both conditions through thinking “LINE” as new spatial apparatus. The line generates spatial division of two clear territories, where a flexibly defined “third” space dancing in between, amorphous in terms of both abstract form and articulated functionality, encourages clarity on plan and differentiation on section.

Inside Out

The headquarter complex is designed as two-layered structure. According to the site requirements the building coverage doesn't exceed 35% of the whole territory. The site perimeter is surrounded by the high "perforated" shell. Therefore, the empty space near the building is connected by the shell to create an absolutely new extraordinary public space. The "perforation" makes the shell transparent for the sun light and open for visitors. The construction of the design center is moved to the courtyard boundary. It provides a lot of additional space for exposition. This building shows us an unique connection between inner and outer spaces, between the process of designing and its result. The design is created inside the building. And further the produced art is exposed outside the building in the space of the courtyard. Cultural public events such as artistic performances, concerts, lectures and others will also be held here. On the main facade of the inner building is planning to build a great slow-walking staircase with a slow steps. The staircase becomes a tribune for observing art installations or events in the courtyard. The promenade staircase is leading to the top of the building where visitors have a possibility to enjoy the stunning view of the city.

SOFT METROPOLITANISM
YBN-A-G100975

SOFT METROPOLITANISM Proposal for North Design Union Headquarters The concept of metropolitanism remains one of the most critical aspects in the construction of contemporary cities. Traditionally associated to size and bigness, metropolitanism is nowadays strategically associated to strategies of accumulation, juxtaposition and collision of different programs that create metropolitan conditions of contemporary life. The city of Tianjin is intently developing its metropolitan condition. Our proposal for the new NDU HQ wishes to become an optimistic intervention able to qualify both the city and the institution, endowing itself with a powerful representative condition as well as a programmatic efficient performance. The project is a crystallography of prisms that orchestrates its surrounding open spaces and establishes an iconic relationship with Tianjin's skyline. PROGRAM: NDU HQ as a lab for new modernity Inside the building, program has been arranged in plan and section so that working and flexible spaces can be used jointly or separately at demand. Each prism is a programmatic entity that is architecturally defined and equipped for maximum, dedicated performance. These prisms, either horizontal or vertical, have been arranged around a central ring that remains flexible and fully equipped for perpetual change. Instead of being just a foyer or information area, this space in-between is like a trading arena where users inform and stimulate, a place where the interface between different prisms is organized -spaces for exhibition, work, interaction, and play-, making of the new building not only an efficient working platform but above all a laboratory for new modernity. URBAN STRATEGY: programmatic contextualism The project site is strongly generic, both spatially and morphologically. The new building orientates its public areas -café, foyer, workshops- towards the main street. Outside elements such as staggered arenas or green topographies endow this place with a playful condition and make of it a park of programmatic condition. More hermetic programs such as list of programs here are placed at the upper prisms. They are configured sections of overlapping platforms that can be used jointly or independently at demand, according to programmatic needs. Space reserved for public use is located on ground level, and takes the shape of topographies, amphitheaters and meeting arenas. ENERGY SUPPLY: an efficient icon The new NDU HQ has been designed according to environmental technology criteria that apply the following guidelines: constructive optimization of the building, energetic demand limitation, intelligent façades, radiant heating, eco-tested building materials and optimized maintenance. The project takes full advantage of its sprouting geometry. Its body is a layered mass made of different material strata -concrete, glass, solar panels and leds- that intermingle and stack successively, creating a design that is both sustainable and performative. This way the building: has thermal inertia -thanks to its thick façades; filters natural light -thanks to its stacked transparencies; produces energy -thanks to its technological terminals. Radiant heat and cooling are implemented through a system of subterranean pipes that benefit from stable earth temperatures. Thus, by genetically modifying the metropolitan paradigm, a project emerges that is at the same time: Sustainable (it is not just low-energy, it produces energy); Performative (it is light and massive, dark and clear, light-absorbing and light-emitting); Iconic (it operates at a local and national level).

Liberation of space
YBN-A-G101617

The motivation of the scheme is to cater to the special group of designers. Instead of trying to fit in the space set up, give the space back to the users seems wiser. Therefore, the program further exploits the method of traditional planar organization and imbeds it into the change within section domain , which advance the two-dimensional planar liberation to the comprehensive three-dimensional space liberation. The specific approach of the scheme is to first determine the relatively stable functional space and the core tubes in the suspension structure, and give profound changes to the surrounding variable space by sliding and rotating them. The horizontal plates enrich the spatial combination in the section while strengthening the structural integrity. The deformation of the space requires the users to communicate with each other, so as to achieve the purpose of event occurence and promote accidental interactive behavior. In addition, the design hopes that under the condition of certain elasticity of materials, it will be able to deform into more possibilities in the future .

The charm of cheeseburger goes far beyond the superposition of simple ingredients. The arrangement and processing of space also have such skills. The design integrates all kinds of complex functional spaces through the shared space of volume center ingeniously. Privacy and openness are satisfied, and the space with various possibilities and interesting features is created.

It has different spatial forms by changing the envelope structure, The False Coexisting with the True. To create an open, shared, active, pleasant and organic office environment. A central courtyard is formed by enclosing the building blocks. Let the building and the external site organically integrated by setting up the openings in the part of the building, bridging between the main functional blocks in the north and south. And it has a good view of the western landscape by vertical layout. Different blocks are connected through corridors to form an organic whole, and enrich the space experience through dislocated stairs. Build bridges and parts of buildings into shared communication space are to promote communication between users. Planting vegetation on parts of the roof is used to meet users ‘physiological and psychological needs.

The project is located in Chen Tang National Independent Innovation Demonstration Zone in Hexi District. In the new era, Chen Tang has actively integrated into the "one belt and one road" strategy and coordinated development of Beijing, Tianjin and Hebei, and has accelerated the construction of "one base and three districts", conscientiously implemented the municipal government's deployment requirements, and actively adapted to the new normal economic development. With the aim of "innovation, integration and win-win", we will build a strong and strong alliance of northern Design Alliance camp. In the design of this project, we hope to create a highly integrated and shared office community, to meet the basic functional needs as the premise, to share as the design goal, through the integration and innovation of spatial relations, to design a new and efficient office space. In the design of the scheme, the core concept is sharing. In the basic prototype of the rectangle, we implant a zigzag public transport and sharing streamline. While solving the problem of connection, the turning of the streamline itself forms different spatial levels, which provides office workers with rich spatial experience. In the overall relationship, we have a certain degree of deconstruction of the function, combined with the zigzag streamline, forming the basic zoning relationship between upper and lower parts. The lower part is mainly open to the outside world, while the upper part is mainly internal office. At the same time, through the insertion of the audio-visual room, the space is divided into East and West regions. The eastern part is mainly open space, carrying the open. Office, book space and exhibition space are the main ones, while private space is the main one on the West side, which mainly includes independent office, conference space and dining space. In the language of architecture, we emphasize the fast segmentation of the body, forming a strong geometric relationship, creating some instability and interesting through the large cantilever. We hope that through the different spacing grids on the facade of the building, we can cover different functions together to form a relatively complete body relationship. At the same time, the facade grille can also play a role in shading the sun.

PLAN-NET
YBN-A-G105463

(BACKGROUD) This contest confronts us designers with concrete yet serious question about the future: in what kind of space shall we work, and in what means shall we work. We decided to imagine life in the future, say, in 30 years. People used to have fantasy about the world in 100 or even 1000 years, But, for us , constrained by our designer thoughts, have only the picture of 30, or 50 years after in our mind. (WORK & LIFE) Working and living are considered to be the two sides of one coin, but there should not be contradiction between them, unless you are forced to live ,or forced to work. In the future, living and working will homogenize into one. In our 30 year after picture, aka our PLAN-NET,each individual is a working unit, using the PLAN-NET system to negotiate and match partners, to cooperate with people who share the same interests with him/her, to form a new IP ( something similar to a company). And thanks to the system, The unbalance between life and work will be replaced by the balance between body and mind. (DESIGNER) Designers’ working activities in this PLAN-NET are divided into two layers: the design of physical space and virtual space; the design of human related space and nonhuman space. In the PLAN-NET architecture, we intrigue the creative thinking of designers by switching between physical space and virtual space, human related space and nonhuman space. (WORK SPACE OF DESIGNER) Each designer will have his/her own planet, she/he can start her/his work as long as she/he enters the cabin of PLAN-NET. Based on the data, the cabin will take them to the place where they should go or where they need to go. Perhaps for face-to-face meetings, or just to enjoy solitude. Beyond the cabin, there are wheat fields, sand piles, roses, and water moorings. There is also loneliness, courage, sincerity and unknowingness that every "Little Prince" has to face. ----"PLAN-NET”

Infinite City 纳城

The Infinite City builds itself the shared home to the North Design Union (NDU) members against the backdrop of sharing-economy. The design aims to promote the interaction of ideas between individuals, the exchange of knowledge between groups within and beyond workspace through the concept of sharing. A PLACE OF SPACE-SHARING The Infinite City proposes a new office prototype, which combines the advantage of high-density vertical stacking found in modern skyscrapers and the advantage of enormous flexible open plan found in tech-company HQs. To maximize the sharing open plan on such limited site, we fold the giant infinite open plan into a looped ramp. As it blurs the boundary of the floors, the whole building becomes an giant flat town which boosts the spatial efficiency, adapts borderless space-sharing and even additional constructions within the system under this logic. The economic advantages are obvious to these more cost-effective space-sharing compared with isolatedly equipped offices. By accommodating all basic office-relevant events on the open ramping floors, all members are encouraged to share the spaces, office common resources including computers, desks, chairs, leisure space, library, conference facilities and utilities. Enclosed rooms ranging from private office and confidential meeting room, research room to studio and fabrication shop are also provided for shared use upon reservation. We also designed an across-building sliding ceiling mechanism to make sharing easier and faster. A PLACE OF MIND-SHARING The Infinite City integrates fragmented organizations into a shared platform. First, the design provides a spectrum of programs to suit the needs of different users from different industries. Then the giant sloping loop of the building glues them altogether. On this loop we programmed ample spaces for people to collaborate, to interact and even to play. And the slope itself encourages wandering and travelling. All this allows for more exposure to different people and ideas, therefore enhancing the coincidence for collaboration, creativity and productivity. Researchers, designers, analyst, consultant, manufacture and media -- members from different industries and walks of life help each other’s business thrive by sharing knowledges, services and even ideas. A PLACE SHARES WITH CITY The Infinite City shares with the city in both urban and landscape perspective. The landscape around the building is designed to match the sloping character of the architecture, so that the entire building can be seen as a continuation of the urban green park to the west. The west façade design embraces the park by maximizing views and direct access. A passageway bypassing the building circulation brings people to the inner courtyard even if the building is closed, incorporating the courtyard with the city park system. The sunken plaza to the east responds to the dense urban tissues abutting the east and south side of the site, providing a place to gather for citizens. The spatial approachability lures visitors to explore the open areas and public events within and around the building, positively would bring in energy to the society and helps the Union’s media promotion. Lastly, the design speaks to the industrial heritage of the site with simple cuboidal envelope and the exposed ceiling with mechanical pendant. In conclusion, the Infinite City provides infinite possibilities for the sharing of all kind of minds, partnerships with local or even global business, and broader media exposure as the integration of North Design Union. Innovative integration as the infinite town is, it contributes to the idea of comprehensive sharing and finally leads path to infinite mutual benefits. Index: Site area: 8118.7 m2 Actual land area within boundary: 4911.3 m2 Building Area: 1703.2 m2 Building coverage: 34.7% Green Area:4013.2 m2 Green coverage: 47% Floor area: 7565.4 m2 Floor area ratio:1.54

LOCAL STREET
YBN-A-G106474

Lao Tzu said, «A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step». Space + communication = Innovation. The building is structured as a city, the space is specifically created for motion. The street – the way THOUSAND MILES is the main channel of the city and the nerve center of the physical space. Everything is connected with the street where there are the most significant ideas come out. The street is the perfect transiting area for offices attendants, to gather or meet unexpectedly, creating emulation and wellness which is key in an innovative process. In this building, the open environment is maintaining visual contact to a large extent, even between the floors. Thus increasing interaction between co-workers.
